As the summer of 2025 progresses, the Black Feather Foundation continues to grow its presence in Northern Virginia, delivering high-impact, community-centered events that support Afghan refugee families. Through a series of interactive programs focused on youth development, the organization is redefining what it means to serve with purpose—and to lead with heart.
At the core of its work are the Black Feather Day to Play events, which have quickly become a signature initiative. Designed as immersive days of hands-on learning, physical activity, and creative expression, these events offer children and families an opportunity to connect, grow, and thrive.
In recent months, multiple Day to Play events have been held in neighborhoods across the region. Each one is uniquely tailored to bring communities together through meaningful experiences—featuring rotating stations for sports, education and health. The most recent event, held in Alexandria, exemplified this model: children took part in organized sports, learned about staying active and healthy, and participated in engaging educational activities at a local nature center—all in one afternoon.
Partnerships have played a major role in this momentum. Ongoing collaborations with Flagstar Football and VOLO have provided not only space and coaching but a consistent spirit of encouragement and empowerment for youth participants. These relationships have helped make volleyball clinics, football scholarships, and inclusive sports programming possible—removing barriers and giving children the tools to thrive through teamwork.
In parallel with these athletic efforts, the Foundation has continued offering art workshops that center on personal expression and healing. One such session encouraged children to explore the theme “bloom where you are planted,” creating artwork and handwritten bookmarks to share with loved ones. While RSVPs for the class were modest, the actual turnout far exceeded expectations—proof of the community’s growing trust and excitement.
Beyond programming, outreach efforts have remained strong. Members of the Black Feather team have met with families throughout Falls Church and Alexandria, distributing event flyers, visiting community centers, and building relationships within newcomer-owned businesses and apartment communities. This intentional, face-to-face engagement ensures that no one is left behind and that every child has access to opportunities that promote growth, belonging, and joy.
As fall approaches, the Black Feather Foundation remains committed to its mission: to serve refugee youth through consistent, community-driven experiences that prioritize forward movement. Whether on a football field, at a painting table, or in conversation with a new friend, every moment is building toward something greater.
